Nick Saban says Ryan Silverfield ‘probably has the toughest job’ of any SEC head coach

Nick Saban spoke on behalf of new Arkansas head coach Ryan Silverfield during SEC Network’s coverage of the final day of SEC Media Days on Thursday morning in Tampa.
The former Alabama head coach turned ESPN college football analyst won so much that fans might forget he didn’t win right away in Tuscaloosa after taking over in 2007. As Silverfield takes over in Fayetteville, there is a huge rebuilding job ahead as the Razorbacks are coming off a 2-10 season that included the firing of Sam Pittman.
In steps Silverfield, who went 50-25 at Memphis and now is trying to get Arkansas back toward respectability before things can really get better. Saban believes Silverfield has a real shot to make that happen, throwing his support behind the 45-year-old Jacksonville native on the morning that Silverfield met with reporters at Media Days.
“You know, Ryan Silverfield probably has the toughest job of all these guys. I mean, I think they only won 2 games last year or whatever, so probably needs to do a lot,” Nick Saban said. “But I do think from talking to him, he’s got the right disposition and patience about it, he loves the place, and I think he knows what he needs to do to try to build it there.”
Silverfield had only been a college head coach at Memphis prior to getting his big break at Arkansas, and starting this fall he’ll have a chance to prove Saban right when that huge challenge Saban was talking about Thursday arrives in full blast.
As Silverfield tries to point the Hogs back in the direction of SEC relevance this fall, he’ll have a lot of roadblocks. Meanwhile, there is an SEC title to win, too, and here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the top teams in the mix to be SEC champions in 2026:
