Nick Saban’s birthday is Halloween. It’s fitting, as opponents were often left shaking in their boots when they saw his teams on the opposite sideline.
Saban coached 28 seasons of college football. He only played twice on his birthday, winning both contests by a combined score of 70-5. This Saturday, instead of roaming the field, he was on the College GameDay set. There, fellow analyst Pat McAfee asked him for his “biggest piece of advice” to impart wisdom on viewers. The seven-time national champion revealed he always kept things simple.
“The one thing I learned growing up, which is nothing spectacular… treat other people like you would like to be treated,” Saban said. “My mother always told me, ‘God loves everyone. Even the people you don’t like. So, be nice and kind to everyone!'”
Saban may have walked that mantra in everyday life, but his teams didn’t do it on the field. He went 297-71-1 in his college career and spent at least one week ranked No. 1 in the country for 15 straight years at Alabama (2008-22).
The two schools Nick Saban won national championships for — the aforementioned Crimson Tide and LSU Tigers — face off in a game with huge College Football Playoff ramifications on Nov. 7. Kickoff between Alabama and LSU is 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC).
