North Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, the son of head coach Bill Belichick, has been placed on medical leave by the Tar Heels, according to UNC’s head coach on Thursday.
When asked when Belichick would be able to return, Bill Belichick replied that he’ll be back “as soon as possible.” An exact timetable, then, is uncertain as North Carolina prepares for its season opener on August 29, just over 3 weeks away.
โJust want to let everyone know that my son Steveโs on medical leave, and look forward to getting him back as soon as possible,โ Belichick said, via On3 Sports. โItโs a medical situation so I really canโt make any further comment on that.โ
Belichick arrived at North Carolina alongside his father at the start of last season, and the Tar Heels boasted the No. 38 defense in the country in terms of total yards allowed per game.
Prior to his hiring at North Carolina, Belichick served as Washington’s defensive coordinator in 2024. Before that, Belichick worked under his father with the New England Patriots as a defensive assistant, safeties coach and outside linebackers coach. He won 3 Super Bowl rings alongside his father on the Patriots coaching staff.
