The Ohio State Buckeyes and USC Trojans have only played each other three times in the past three decades. The two college football blue bloods have a lot on the line, though, during their Week 9 clash. Before kickoff on Saturday night, they let one another know this would be an intense affair.

With roughly an hour until their game got underway, the Buckeyes and Trojans were spotted jawing as Ohio State was headed back to its locker room. Coaches and officials intervened to keep tensions from escalating between the two teams.

USC (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) dropped out of the AP poll with its 24-7 loss to Wisconsin in Week 8. The Trojans have contests with No. 4 Indiana and No. 7 UCLA remaining on their schedule after tonight’s tussle vs. the Buckeyes. If Lincoln Riley’s team can win, it will likely jump back into the top 25 and could earn a College Football Playoff berth by running the table.

Across the field, Ohio State (6-1, 4-0 Big Ten) may be without starting quarterback Julian Sayin for the rest of the season. If that’s the case, the Buckeyes will be judged on their performance with Luke Fahey when the CFP committee gets together. Ryan Day’s squad needs to show it is still a formidable foe without its top passer to assure itself of a playoff bid.

USC leads Ohio State 14-3 through one quarter of play in Los Angeles. You can watch the Buckeyes and Trojans on NBC.
