Former Oklahoma great and NFL standout running back DeMarco Murray is reportedly headed back to the professional ranks as a coach.
The 6-year veteran Sooners assistant coach is accepting the position as running backs coach with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Sooner Scoop’s Georgia Stoia confirmed the move, adding that it was “not an easy decision” for the OU alum.
Murray will join head coach Andy Reid’s staff to replace Todd Pinkston.
Murray delivered a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons at Oklahoma from 2007-2010, including a 1,214-yard effort as a senior in 2010 en route to becoming the Sooners’ all-time leader in points scored (390) and touchdowns (65).
Selected in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys with the 71st overall pick, Murray played with the Cowboys from 2011-14, Philadelphia Eagles in 2015, and Tennessee Titans from 2016-17. Murray was a 3-time Pro Bowler, the 2014 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, and finished his pro career with 7,174 rushing yards and 49 touchdowns.
Murray chose to return to the college ranks as a coach in 2019, coaching running backs for a season at Arizona before returning to his alma mater in 2020.
Murray will work both with Reid and new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy in Kansas City to inject more explosiveness in the Chiefs’ running game. Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco led the Chiefs in rushing in 2025, with Hunt finishing with 611 yards and Pacheco with 462 yards.
