As if there wasn’t enough drama surrounding Lane Kiffin‘s big decision, we now have headlines about the Ole Miss coach saying he was called a “hoe.” The reporter who upset Kiffin says his words are being misinterpreted.

When discussing on a podcast whether Kiffin would stay at Ole Miss or leave for another job, Ben Garrett of On3 site OMSpirit quoted rapper Ludacris, saying “you can’t turn a hoe into a housewife; hoes don’t act right.”

Garrett’s words made it back to Kiffin, who accused the reporter of “calling him a hoe” in an on-field postgame interaction. They also discussed the matter in the postgame press conference.

Late Friday evening Central Time, Garrett posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) offering his take on the situation.

“I didn’t call Lane Kiffin a hoe. Great sentence, and it’s true,” Garrett said. “I used a metaphor clunkily – is that a word? – you can’t turn a hoe into a housewife; hoes don’t act right.”

Garrett explained the metaphor usage was about the “disloyalty” shown by Kiffin in recent weeks to Ole Miss. Garrett called it particularly brazen that members of Kiffin’s family visited Gainesville and Baton Rouge as Kiffin considered job offers from Florida and LSU, but the coach took issue with questions about the reported visits. (Florida has since shifted focus to other candidates in its search.)

“I regret my role in how this turned out,” Garrett said to conclude his video. “I do not regret the metaphor.”

Garrett’s full video message, just under 3 minutes, can be viewed below.
