Oregon trolls Mike Gundy by playing his Autzen Stadium comments on scoreboard
Oregon would eventually be winning heavily on the actual scoreboard, but that wasn’t good enough for the Ducks’ stadium operators on Saturday afternoon at the usually rocking Autzen Stadium.
It was that stadium in Eugene, which is annually one of the toughest places to play, that took advantage of Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy’s comments from this week’s press conference, when he downplayed the Autzen Stadium crowds.
And it was that same crowd that was witnessing the sixth-ranked Ducks’ beatdown of Gundy’s Cowboys on Saturday afternoon, on national TV no less. The game was the 3:30 p.m. ET feature game on CBS, and Oregon’s scoreboard didn’t take long to feature Gundy pretty much downplaying the effectiveness of the Autzen Stadium crowd.
This was right before the start of the game, mind you, before the onslaught began. Gundy’s comments were played before kickoff, and Gundy’s Cowboys went into the fourth quarter trailing 69-3.
Here is the Autzen Stadium scoreboard at its finest, without even featuring a point for the home team:
The boos followed Gundy’s comments, of course, and then the game started, and the rout was on. It was 20-0 after the first quarter and 41-3 at halftime — the worst halftime deficit of Gundy’s 21-year tenure in Stillwater.
Through 3 quarters, Oregon had outgained Oklahoma State 601-141. The Ducks averaged 11.3 yards per play through the first 45 minutes while Oklahoma State averaged 3.1.
