The San Diego State Aztecs have yet to beat an FBS team in the 2026 season. They have an opportunity to do so in Week 5 when they battle the Texas State Bobcats, but they’re heading into that game vastly undermanned.

According to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach and Pete Thamel, the Aztecs are currently dealing with a mumps outbreak. Per Schlabach, the San Diego County Public Health Services confirmed 14 cases of mumps, and that the outbreak remained a singular athletic team. The San Diego Union-Tribune identified the team in a previous report.

“The football gods have not really favored us with the injury luck,” Aztec head coach Sean Lewis said on Wednesday. “Guys have got to be ready to step into the light when the time comes… we’ve been given a nice storm here. But this too shall pass, and we’ve got to be able to see our way through it.”

According to Schlabach, the Aztecs’ Week 5 availability report lists “nearly three dozen players, including 17 who were listed as doubtful or out.” Running backs Lucky Sutton (high ankle sprain) and Javion Kinnard — who injured his knee in Week 4 — are out and doubtful, respectively, for this weekend’s game. San Diego State and Texas State play at 10:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night (CW).
