SEC Network host Paul Finebaum was one of the many college football analysts who expected Georgia to win handily over Notre Dame on Saturday. But after the Bulldogs’ narrow win, Finebaum admits that his opinion about both teams has changed.
Finebaum shared those thoughts on his regular weekly appearance on “The Roundtable,” on Birmingham-based 94.5 FM radio station WJOX.
“I think Georgia seemed tight, thatโs probably not hard to calculate, understanding the circumstances and the atmosphere,” Finebaum said. “Maybe it got a little too big at times for them. But what they did at the end of the game in the second half I thought was significant. Iโm like a lot of people, I didnโt think itโd be close and I came away really impressed with Notre Dame.”
The Fighting Irish have changed plenty of minds around the country, but Finebaum’s point is will it matter in the end? They play Virginia this week, and Southern Cal, at Michigan and at Stanford appear to be their toughest games remaining.
“They really put up an incredibly challenging and respectful fight,” Finebaum said. “I give them credit for playing games like this because they donโt play a conference schedule and they donโt play in a conference championship game. Thatโs the good news. The bad news is I donโt think they have a path to the Playoff, because where do they go now, Michigan? Which has been seriously devalued, Southern Cal, which is a good win, but itโs not going to be a great win, and Virginia this week? Cโmon. Theyโre out of notches on their belt to make a claim for the Playoff.”
