Paul Finebaum destroys Rhett Lashlee for anti-SEC rant: ‘Comical, embarrassing’
On Tuesday, SMU coach Rhett Lashlee made the case that the ACC is a “deeper” league than the SEC.
“The SEC has had the same 6 schools win the championship since 1964,” Lashlee said. “Same six. Not a single one has been different since 1964. That’s a top-heavy league.”
On Wednesday, Paul Finebaum responded.
Finebaum didn’t think much of Lashlee’s rant, which he referred to as “embarrassing” and “comical.”
“If I understand correctly, he’s the head coach at SMU,” Finebaum said. “1987, do you know what happened at SMU? They shut the program down. While he’s making fun of the SEC for winning national championships all over the place, SMU is the most corrupt program in the history of college football.
“And Rhett Lashlee has the nerve to get up there and throw stones? By the way, he played at Arkansas … That’s one of the most comical, embarrassing rants I have ever heard.”
Here’s a clip of comments from both Lashlee and Finebaum:
SMU is coming off a College Football Playoff appearance despite losing in the ACC Championship Game to Clemson last December. The Mustangs avoided playing a top-15 all season until they were unceremoniously crushed by Penn State in the CFP first round, 38-10.
SMU does play Clemson and Miami in 2025, but there are no SEC teams currently on its schedule.
