Pitt football player Mason Alexander was killed in a car accident in his hometown on Saturday night.

According to ESPN, Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident took place in Fishers, Indiana. Here are details from the crash via ESPN:

According to the Hamilton County sheriff’s office, he was a passenger in a 2016 BMW driving south on Florida Road. The driver of the car tried to pass a 2015 Toyota before a hillcrest and swerved to avoid a head-on collision with another car traveling in the northbound lane. The BMW traveled off the road and eventually hit a tree, catching on fire.

Peyton Daniels, a Butler football player and former high school teammate of Alexander, posted this tribute on social media:

Alexander was an early enrollee in the class of 2025 and was set to participate in spring practice this month with the Panthers. He starred at Hamilton Southeastern High School and signed with Pitt as a 4-star prospect back in December.

Pitt also confirmed his passing with this tribute on social media:

Coach Pat Narduzzi also released a statement on Alexander’s passing.

I received a call this morning that no parent, teacher or coach ever wants to get — the news of the sudden loss of a young and promising life,” Narduzzi wrote in-part. “Our entire program is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Mason Alexander’s passing. Mason had just enrolled in Pitt in January following his early graduation from Indiana’s Hamilton Southeastern High School. Even during that short time, he made a great impression on all of us.”

Here’s Narduzzi’s statement in full:
