Jamie Newman has a complicated history at Georgia, and now with him accepting an invitation to the Senior Bowl, a premiere postseason exhibition game that’s valuable for NFL scouting, another wrinkle has emerged.

Newman, the Wake Forest graduate transfer quarterback, was expected to emerge as the victor out of a preseason quarterback competition primarily with D’Wan Mathis and possibly JT Daniels, though Daniels wasn’t cleared, according to Kirby Smart, until a few weeks later. But Newman opted out of the season in early September.

In his announcement about the opt out, Newman said he decided to skip the season โ€œafter much prayer and discussion with my family.โ€ His decision was influenced by โ€œthe uncertainties of this year amid a global pandemic.โ€

Since then, Mathis got the start to open the season at Arkansas and struggled mightily. Then Stetson Bennett relieved him and helped Georgia win the game, then became a bit of a folk hero given his background as a walk-on and JUCO transfer who is listed under 6 feet tall. Bennett played well as Georgia started 3-0, then stumbled against Alabama, got by Kentucky with a lackluster effort, and then struggled again in a loss to Florida while he suffered a shoulder injury.

With the Georgia QB situation in a quandary, some Georgia fans are irritated with Newman’s decision, and don’t want Newman to represent Georgia at the Senior Bowl on Jan. 30, 2021.
