Rapid Reaction: John Mateer leads Oklahoma to big win over Michigan
Oklahoma defeated Michigan 24-13 on Saturday night in Norman to secure what is perhaps the biggest win of the Brent Venables era to date.
The Sooners jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first half, but Michigan responded with a 75-yard touchdown run on the first play of the third quarter to close the deficit. OU responded, too, though, thanks to brilliant play from John Mateer.
Mateer led Oklahoma on multiple lengthy scoring drives in the second half to secure the victory. He finished the night 21-of-34 for 270 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. His legs were also a factor as he added a team-high 74 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground.
For all the talk about true freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, he really struggled in his first career road start. Underwood threw for just 142 yards on 24 attempts in the loss and provided very little in the run game.
Oklahoma will turn its attention to Temple as the Sooners go on the road to face the Owls in Week 3.
