Rapid Reaction: Texas upsets Texas A&M, spoils Aggies’ bid for undefeated season
Texas upset Texas A&M 27-17 in Austin on Friday night, ending the Aggies’ chances at a 12-0 regular season.
The Aggies took a 10-3 lead into halftime, but UT was much better in the second half. The Longhorns out-scored Texas A&M 24-7 in the second half thanks to some big plays by quarterback Arch Manning.
Manning put Texas ahead 13-10 in the third quarter with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo. Then, with A&M threatening to make a comeback, Manning put the Longhorns back up by double digits with a 35-yard touchdown run with just over 7 minutes remaining in the game.
That proved to be the difference in the game as the Aggies were unable to get much going offensively. Marcel Reed threw 2 interceptions and Texas A&M went just 4-of-13 on third down.
Texas beat Texas A&M for the 3rd consecutive time to extend its all-time series lead to 78-37-5.
Because of this result, Texas A&M will not compete in the SEC Championship Game next weekend. Georgia will take the Aggies’ place and will face either Alabama or Ole Miss depending on the outcome of the Iron Bowl.
Texas A&M is still likely to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff, however. The Longhorns are at 9-3 and could receive at-large consideration as well. The next CFP rankings will be revealed on Tuesday evening.
