Mark down ESPN’s Rece Davis as one who isn’t totally sold on Lane Kiffin’s true motivation behind making the move from Ole Miss to LSU – a coaching change that rocked the college football world on several levels.
“Look, I wish him success. He’s neither friend nor enemy. He’s a coach that we cover,” Davis said Monday on the College GameDay podcast. “I wish him success, because these guys put a lot into it, and he does too, but I don’t need to hear any more about pouring into young people.
“I don’t need to hear that. You know, this is about one thing. It’s about winning, and it’s about his career. And that’s okay, because that’s what a lot of people do in life.”
Kiffin, 50, left Ole Miss while the Rebels are preparing for a presumptive berth in the College Football Playoff – setting off a firestorm of criticism both in Oxford and around the Southeastern Conference.
Taking over in Baton Rouge for the fired Brian Kelly, Kiffin is set to earn a reported $91 million over a 7-year deal with attached incentives that would make him the highest-paid coach in the country should the Tigers win the CFP national championship.
