SEC coach linked to Virginia Tech job vacancy

On Sunday, Virginia Tech announced it would be parting ways with head coach Brent Pry following a blowout loss to Old Dominion in Week 3.

It was a brutal defeat, as the team has looked worse each week after a tough Week 1 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks. Pry finished with a record of 16-24 in Blacksburg, and names are already being thrown out as the next guy to take over this program.

ESPN shared a list of several potential candidates for the job, including South Carolina coach Shane Beamer.

It is still very early, but Beamer is going to be a favorite for this job with the obvious ties for his family. His father, Frank Beamer, helped build Virginia Tech into a college football contender, as he was the coach there from 1987-2015.

Here ESPN’s analysis on Shane Beamer’s potential fit in Blacksburg:

The search likely has to start with Beamer, Frank’s son and a former Virginia Tech player who grew up around the program and witnessed the Hokies reach incredible heights. He has proven himself at South Carolina, beating rival Clemson in two of the past three years and recording other notable victories in SEC play. Beamer, 48, loves South Carolina and sees it as more of a destination than most coaches do. But sustaining success there isn’t easy, and the chance to restore Virginia Tech — in a league with an easier CFP path — could tempt him. Virginia Tech has to make him say no.

The Gamecocks had their own issues in Week 3, as they lost at home to Vanderbilt 31-7 as LaNorris Sellers left the game with a concussion.

Beamer is obviously going to be focused on getting South Carolina back on the winning track, but his name will be tied to this job until there is an announcement.
