SEC files amendment to LSU lawsuit seeking authority for expulsion

A new development in the SEC and LSU’s legal battle has the conference seeking legal authority to expel the school from the league.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel and others reported the news Tuesday morning. Thamel posted on X, “The SEC is not expected to take such action, but the filing indicates the seriousness of the league as it attempts to affirm the legal right to enforce its own rule.”

The conference filed a lawsuit on Sept. 3 naming LSU, head football coach Lane Kiffin and others as defendants. In the suit, the SEC states that its First Amendment rights are being violated by being forced to associate with an LSU program that was going against conference rules on the recruiting and signing of players who had been on NFL rosters. LSU added two players who had been on NFL rosters and recruited a third who was ultimately claimed by another NFL team after being waived.
Though a Louisiana court ruling made Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris legally eligible with the NCAA, LSU opted not to include them on the roster for the Week 1 game against Clemson. Wright and Harris are enrolled at LSU, meaning they could be added to the roster at a later date. As of right now, they cannot practice with the Tigers as they are not on the roster provided to the SEC.
