With South Carolina facing a major test this coming weekend against No. 2 Georgia, Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer was asked about his relationship with former head coach, now Georgia assistant, Will Muschamp. Muschamp called Beamer a few months ago when Beamer got the job.

โ€œI wouldโ€™t say super well,โ€ Beamer said of their relationship on a Sunday teleconference, per The Big Spur. โ€œIโ€™ve got a ton of respect for him as a coach and as a person. I knew him a little bit, just from recruiting over the years and obviously his relationship with Kirby (Smart) is well known and I’ve worked with Kirby, so thereโ€™s a lot of carryover, from that standpoint. Iโ€™ve seen him out on the road recruiting at places and heโ€™s been great. Has been very willing to help me since I became the head coach.

โ€œI talked to him a couple of times when I initially go hired, around Christmas – around New Years, I guess, in January. We talked, just about different things and somebody Iโ€™ve got a ton of respect for, so I know heโ€™s doing a phenomenal job for Kirby over there in Athens. I know it will be an exciting night for him on Saturday night as well and just a really good football coach.โ€

Beamer was also asked how big of a factor will Muschamp play in this game.

โ€œI mean, very little, and thatโ€™s no disrespect to Will, Beamer said. โ€œI mean, thereโ€™s none of the schemes are alike, what weโ€™re doing here compared to last year. Heโ€™s obviously going to know personnel and about certain guys, offense, defense, and special teams. Heโ€™s going to know about those guys that he can certainly help them with, but heโ€™s got more familiarity with South Carolinaโ€™s team than I do Georgia, but some of those guys on Georgiaโ€™s team were there when I was there.”

The Gamecocks and Beamer will see Saturday if Muschamp’s knowledge of the Gamecock program and its players will be a factor.

The South Carolina-Georgia game will kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday night.
