Shane Beamer discusses ‘Will Muschamp factor’ in Georgia game, relationship with former South Carolina coach
With South Carolina facing a major test this coming weekend against No. 2 Georgia, Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer was asked about his relationship with former head coach, now Georgia assistant, Will Muschamp. Muschamp called Beamer a few months ago when Beamer got the job.
โI wouldโt say super well,โ Beamer said of their relationship on a Sunday teleconference, per The Big Spur. โIโve got a ton of respect for him as a coach and as a person. I knew him a little bit, just from recruiting over the years and obviously his relationship with Kirby (Smart) is well known and I’ve worked with Kirby, so thereโs a lot of carryover, from that standpoint. Iโve seen him out on the road recruiting at places and heโs been great. Has been very willing to help me since I became the head coach.
โI talked to him a couple of times when I initially go hired, around Christmas – around New Years, I guess, in January. We talked, just about different things and somebody Iโve got a ton of respect for, so I know heโs doing a phenomenal job for Kirby over there in Athens. I know it will be an exciting night for him on Saturday night as well and just a really good football coach.โ
Beamer was also asked how big of a factor will Muschamp play in this game.
โI mean, very little, and thatโs no disrespect to Will, Beamer said. โI mean, thereโs none of the schemes are alike, what weโre doing here compared to last year. Heโs obviously going to know personnel and about certain guys, offense, defense, and special teams. Heโs going to know about those guys that he can certainly help them with, but heโs got more familiarity with South Carolinaโs team than I do Georgia, but some of those guys on Georgiaโs team were there when I was there.”
The Gamecocks and Beamer will see Saturday if Muschamp’s knowledge of the Gamecock program and its players will be a factor.
The South Carolina-Georgia game will kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday night.
