Hall of Fame head coach Lou Holtz passed away on Wednesday at the age of 89. The former Notre Dame, Arkansas and South Carolina coach is known by many as one of the greatest college football head coaches (and story tellers) the game has ever seen.
Holtz oversaw 6 programs across his 5-decade tenure as a head coach, working at William & Mary, NC State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Notre Dame and South Carolina. He also worked for CBS Sports as an analyst before coming out of retirement to take the South Carolina job in 1999.
Current Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer was one of many college football personalities that took some time to acknowledge Holtz and his impact on the game following the new of Holtz’ passing. Here’s what Beamer had to say on social media regarding Holtz:
Holtz worked as an assistant at South Carolina long before he took the head coaching job in 1999, spending the 1966 and 67 seasons as an assistant coach for the Gamecocks.
He saw an incredible turnaround after a brutal first season in Columbia. Holtz took the Gamecocks from 0-11 to 8-4 with an Outback Bowl victory over Ohio State. The Gamecocks beat Ohio State in the Outback Bowl the year following, too, ending a 9-3 effort on the season.
Holtz was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
