There are some unhappy people in South Bend right now.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish find themselves starting at a 1-2 record after dropping two high-profile non-conference games (Texas, Michigan State).

While the offense is averaging 38 points per contest, the defense is allowing 32 points a game through the first three. Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder has drawn the ire of the fan base…and head coach Brian Kelly:

In the 36-28 loss to Michigan State on Saturday, Notre Dame gave up 501 yards of offense. The Spartans were also 9-of-18 on third-down attempts.

A tweet was sent to Kelly’s official Twitter page, suggesting that Kelly fires his defensive coordinator. This same account liked the tweet — setting off a firestorm of speculation.

Kelly said that it was an ‘inadvertent’ like by someone managing his page, and that he backs VanGorder up completely.

With a very tough schedule remaining, it will be fascinating to see how the relationship between the head coach and the defensive coordinator unfolds in the upcoming weeks.
