South Carolina adds 5th-year App State transfer DB recently granted 2026 eligibility

South Carolina has made a late addition to its 2026 roster.

Former App State cornerback Ethan Johnson recently gained 2026 eligibility via a temporary restraining order granted by a Louisiana court. He will use that eligibility to play for Shane Beamer‘s Gamecocks.

Originally from Huntersville, North Carolina, Johnson was listed at 5-11, 195 pounds on the App State roster. He played in 47 games over 4 seasons.

Johnson’s put up his best tackling numbers in 2023. As a sophomore, he posted 56 total tackles with 4 TFLs, both career highs. In coverage, Johnson had 1 interception and 12 passes defended in 2023.

Last season, Johnson posted a career-high 14 passes defended while nabbing the second interception of his career. He had 44 total tackles with 1.5 TFLs.

South Carolina hosts Kent State to open the season on Sept. 5.
