The Mike Shula Era is over in South Carolina, as Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer has reportedly fired Shula as the team’s offensive coordinator.

Shula was in his second season with South Carolina and his first as Beamer’s offensive coordinator. He was hired in Columbia as an offensive analyst in 2024 and replaced Dowell Loggains – who was moved on to become head coach at Appalachian State.

South Carolina’s offense entered Week 10 ranked 104th nationally in passing yards (193.3), 128th in rushing yards (100.8) and 119th in points (19.7) per game. The Gamecocks dropped a 30-14 decision at No. 7 Ole Miss – USC’s fourth straight conference loss this season.

The Gamecocks traveled to Oxford with one of the worst offenses in the country, averaging just 4.86 yards per play. South Carolina netted 230 yards and averaged 3.7 yards per play at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. South Carolina compiled at least 350 yards on offense just once during Shula’s tenure: a 21-17 Citrus Bowl loss to Illinois last December.

Shula, the 60-year-old son of legendary NFL coach Don Shula, had spent 16 seasons as an NFL assistant coach. An Alabama graduate and former Crimson Tide quarterback, Shula coached the Tide from 2003-06 before being fired to make way for Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa. Alabama was 26-23 on the field during his 4-year tenure but had to vacate 16 victories due to sanctions stemming from textbook-related infractions.
