South Carolina great George Rogers, who was credited for leading the Gamecocks to a pair of 8-4 seasons, is the subject of a new film in the “SEC Storied” series.

The film will air at 9 p.m. on Sept. 5 on the SEC Network. The one-hour documentary was produced by ESPN Films in association with NFL Films and directed by James Weiner. The trailer can be found here.

The 1980 Heisman Trophy winner was picked No. 1 in the 1981 NFL Draft. He was also on the Washington Redskins 1987 Super Bowl team.

Called “King George,” the documentary will chronicle Rogers’ career, and when first played for the Gamecocks in 1977, the program hadn’t won eight games in a season since 1903. Rogers rushed for at least 1,000 yards each season as a sophomore, junior and senior. He finished with 5,091 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns. In 1980, he rushed for 1,781 yards and 14 touchdowns.

“With the incredible success George Rogers had in 1980 on his way to winning the Heisman, it would have been easy for him to get carried away with himself,” Weiner said in a release promoting the documentary. “But that’s not what happened and it’s certainly not what I found when I interviewed George and talked to others about him. Through the ups and downs in his life, he’s remained humble and appreciative of those who’ve been there to support him along the way.”
