South Carolina transfer TE reportedly commits to Ole Miss after previous pledge to ACC team
Transferring within conferences used to be highly frowned upon in the world of college football, but in this era of portal chaos, inter-league moves are becoming more and more common.
Another of such transfers occurred Sunday, as CBSports’ Matt Zenitz reported that former South Carolina tight end Michael Smith has committed to play for Ole Miss next year. This comes after Smith had originally committed to join Fran Brown and Syracuse, as the Savannah, Georgia native will now be remaining in the South.
A monstrous target at 6-foot-6, nearly 250 lbs., Smith sparingly appeared for the Gamecocks over the past two seasons. A myriad of offensive struggles likely played a factor in him only racking up 12 catches for 126 yards and a touchdown through a pair of campaigns.
This past year, Smith only registered in the stat sheet during South Carolina’s first two games of the season.
With his combination of great size and athleticism, Smith figures to have plenty of untapped potential, and the Rebels have done well to be a safe haven for transfers to find their footing. Stars Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy serve as prime examples of that, and Smith could be the next to take a sizable leap in Oxford.
