Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns have chosen a starting quarterback for the 2022 season, and it’s Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers.

The Longhorns coach announced on Friday, via team spokesperson, that Ewers would start as QB over 3-year veteran Hudson Card.

Talking to the press, Sarkisian explained his decision, saying:

“I think Quinn provides the ability to make all the throws in our system. I think heโ€™s got playmaking ability and heโ€™s got a natural passing abilityโ€ฆIโ€™m excited for (Ewers) and Iโ€™m excited for our team. Quinn can make all the throws. I feel very comfortable about that and I feel comfortable about his playmaking ability. His growth in the system has been one where we can really kind of see where itโ€™s going to head under him. Iโ€™m excited about it.”

Despite his talent, Sarkisian did say that decision to start Ewers over veteran Card was not an easy one to make:

“I will say it was a tough decision. Hudson is a very good football player. Weโ€™re very fortunate to have Hudson be our backup and be in the situation that heโ€™s in with the maturity and leadership that he has.”

We’ll see if the move pays off for the Longhorns. They’ll be tested in Week 2 when Alabama comes to Austin.
