Steve Sarkisian says report of Texas’ $50M roster value is ‘inaccurate’

Over the past couple of years, college football headlines have been dominated by the ongoing NIL arms race among the country’s top programs. Top teams routinely drop tens of millions of dollars on their rosters year in and year out just to maintain their spot in the College Football Playoff pecking order.
The exact amount each program spends isn’t public, but experts at The Athletic recently released a chart estimating how much each team across the country is spending on its players this season. Unsurprisingly, the Texas Longhorns ranked first in The Athletic’s rankings, with an estimated roster value in the $50 million range.
Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian isn’t buying the figure, though, calling the report “inaccurate” during his Thursday press conference, according to Texas beat writer Tyler Horka.
Per Horka, Sark also said he’s “all for” transparency when it comes to NIL and releasing how much each team spends on its roster, but he isn’t too big on guesses from media outlets.
Whether The Athletics’ $50 million figure is accurate is debatable, but there’s no denying Texas is spending an obscene amount on its players year in and year out. Every major analyst and insider in the sport agrees that the Horns are either at or near the top of the list when it comes to NIL.
Until there is actual transparency on how much teams are spending on their rosters, though, there’s really no way to know the exact amount Texas and every other team are spending.
