Steve Spurrier offers thoughts on Florida coaching search, Lane Kiffin
There is no greater Florida football legend than Steve Spurrier. The “Head Ball Coach” was the Gators’ first-ever Heisman Trophy winner (1966) and their first national championship-winning head coach (1996). He went 16-6 as Florida’s starting quarterback from 1965-66, then posted a sparkling 122-27-1 record over 12 seasons (1990-2001) as the Gators’ head coach.
As you can see, Spurrier’s legacy in blue and orange is second to none. So, when he speaks, everyone in Gator Nation listens. And Tuesday, he chatted with On3 Sports’ Chris Low about Florida’s head coaching vacancy. When it comes to the Gators’ coaching position, Spurrier said he’s staying “neutral” on the rumored candidates, but did offer some observations on popular candidates, including Lane Kiffin and Jon Gruden.
“They’re throwing Lane’s name out there a lot, and he’d be good here,” Spurrier told On3. “Look at what he’s done at Ole Miss… [Eli] Drinkwitz is another one, even [Jon] Gruden. There are several others, but Lane is being mentioned more than other guys it seems.”
Kiffin and Drinkwitz have been among the most-linked head coaches to the Florida opening since the Gators parted ways with Billy Napier earlier this week. However, there’s still a long way to go before a hire is made.
Florida is idle in Week 9 and will face rival Georgia in Week 10.
