San Diego was looking for a 40-game conference winning streak on Saturday, but Davidson got in the way of the Toreros’ pursuit of the all-time FCS record they share with Duquesne.
Davidson won 31-25.
San Diego’s Michael Hawkins lost a fumble on a punt return and Mason Randall threw an interception in field goal range. Both of those turnovers led to Wildcats touchdowns as Davidson built a 28-10 halftime lead, NBC San Diego reported.
Before Saturday, San Diego’s last loss in the Pioneer Football League was a 13-12 setback at Dayton on Oct. 10, 2015.
A victory against the Wildcats would have tied Nebraska for the second-longest conference winning streak in Division I history, and leave the Toreros four games shy of tying Oklahoma’s record of 44, established from 1952-59, the Associated Press reported.
San Diego coach Dale Lindsey said Wednesday he only learned of the streak recently and that if his players are aware of it, “they didn’t hear it from us.”
Lindsey said the streak is not the coaching staff’s priority, saying, “Our focus is always on the current game.”
San Diego Football tied an FCS all-time record with 39 straight conference wins, dating back to a 1-pt loss to Dayton in October 2015. That streak ended today, with Davidson coming away with the 31-25 win. Here’s the INT that sealed the game. https://t.co/7MzmSNkCea
