Virginia Tech is reportedly turning to Super Bowl champion coach to assist them in the search for the program’s next head football coach. The Hokies are enlisting former Virginia Tech quarterback and ex-NFL head coach Bruce Arians as a consult for the hiring committee to replace Brent Pry, according to On3.
Virginia Tech fired Pry this year into his fourth season after the team started 0-3. Pry only had 1 winning season with Virginia Tech, which occurred in 2023 (7-6). Phillip Montgomery is Virginia Tech’s current interim head coach.
When he was 68 years old, Arians guided the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to victory in Super Bowl LV vs. the Kansas City Chiefs, becoming the oldest NFL coach to win the championship. Arians has the highest winning percentage in Buccaneers history (.651).
Arians is also a 2-time AP NFL Coach of the Year (2012, 2014) capturing the award with the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals.
After playing quarterback at Virginia Tech, Arians began his coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Hokies from 1975-77.
Virginia Tech earned its first victory of the season with a 38-6 victory vs. Wofford last Saturday. Next up for Virginia Tech is a road matchup at NC State on Sept. 27 (7 p.m. ET/CW Network).
