Tennessee suffered a significant loss to the transfer portal on Friday.

Edge rusher Caleb Herring has decided to enter the transfer portal, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer. Herring was impactful as a pass rusher for the Vols this season as he totaled 6 tackles for loss and 4 sacks.

Herring initially signed with Tennessee back in the class of 2023. He was a 4-star prospect in that cycle and ranked as the No. 1 overall player from Tennessee, per 247Sports Composite rankings. He played at Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro.

Herring has seen playing time in each of the last 3 seasons in Knoxville, but took on a bigger role in 2025. Per Pro Football Focus, Herring played 369 snaps on defense for Tennessee this season. He earned a pass rushing grade of 62.9, which ranked 5th among Tennessee edge rushers who were in the regular rotation.

Tennessee will presumably be active in the transfer portal at a number of positions this month. The Vols are looking to take a big step forward in 2026 after falling short of expectations this past fall.

Herring has one season of eligibility remaining at his next destination.
