Joey Aguilar has a new team in 2025, so he’ll wear a new jersey number.

There’s a lot of interest, even beyond Big Orange Nation, in how Aguilar performs as the new Volunteer quarterback. In one of the wildest stories of the transfer portal era, Aguilar joined UT in a QB swap between teams via the portal.

Following the 2024 season, Aguilar entered the transfer portal to explore his options after 2 years at App State. He decided to transfer to UCLA.

Then came Nico Iamaleava’s surprise spring departure from Tennessee. When news broke that Iamaleava was committing to UCLA, Aguilar decided to re-enter the portal before ever playing a down for the Bruins.

With Iamaleava headed to UCLA, Aguilar was looking for a new opportunity and Tennessee was looking for a quarterback. On April 29, Aguilar announced his commitment to play for Josh Heupel‘s program.

Aguilar, a native of Antioch, California, played his first 2 seasons of college football at Diablo Valley Community College, northeast of San Francisco. He then transferred to App State and won Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year.

In 2023, Aguilar rewrote the record book at App State. He owns the single-season school records for passing yards (3,757), passing touchdowns (33), attempts (460), completions (293) and 200-yard passing games (13).

Aguilar followed up his 2023 season with a solid showing in 2024. He started 11 games, throwing for 3,003 passing yards and 23 touchdowns on 390 attempts, with an average of 273.0 passing yards per game.

Tennessee opens the season against Syracuse on Aug. 30 in Atlanta for the Aflac Kickoff Game.
