The Texas Longhorns and Georgia Bulldogs, in back-to-back weeks, lost as the No. 1 team in the AP poll. That in itself is not unprecedented. The fashion in which they dropped their contests, though, is exactly that.

According to ESPN, Texas and Georgia are the first schools in AP poll history to lose to unranked teams in consecutive games since 1990. Beyond that, the Longhorns and Bulldogs are the first programs since the AP poll’s creation (1936) to lose on the final play of their respective matchups.

Both Texas and Georgia lost 27-24 and committed turnovers in the final minute of regulation to seal their defeats. In Week 7, Texas signal-caller Arch Manning threw an interception to Courtland Guillory with 19 seconds left in the game. The Oklahoma Sooners moved the ball downfield to set up Tate Sandell’s game-winning 47-yard field goal.

This afternoon, Georgia passer Gunner Stockton was the culprit. He attempted to run a QB draw to move the Bulldogs into field goal range, but collided with lineman Drew Bobo and fumbled the football. Auburn safety Sylvester Smith-Reed recovered the loose pigskin. Moments later, Tiger kicker Alex McPherson booted a 34-yard field goal for the victory.

Georgia goes on bye in Week 8 before battling Florida in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Meanwhile, Texas hosts Ole Miss under the lights in Austin (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC).
