The Texas Longhorns added a talented defensive component out of the transfer portal over the weekend, reportedly securing linebacker Markus Boswell from Akron.

On3 reported Sunday that Boswell committed to play for Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorns after a stellar freshman season at Akron. He has three seasons of remaining eligibility.

Boswell is an Austin product who played at Lake Travis High School and is also a legacy Longhorn as the son of former Longhorn and Canadian Olympic high jumper Mark Boswell.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Boswell played in 12 games at Akron as a true freshman in 2025. He was credited with 19 tackles, two fumble recoveries, a sack and an interception while playing 294 snaps including (95 on offense) across 11 games.

Boswell was a Class of 2024 graduate and was an unranked prospect but attended prep school for a year before signing with Akron over UMass in the 2025 class.

Texas is set to lose Anthony Hill and Trey Moore to the NFL Draft and Liona Lefau and Bo Barnes to the transfer portal, making linebacker a major position of need in the 2026 portal cycle. Texas has also picked up Pitt transfer Rasheem Biles and Florida State transfer Justin Cryer.

The Longhorns finished the 2025 campaign at 10-3, narrowly missing out on their third consecutive College Football Playoff appearance.
