Texas is off to a rough start offensively in 2025.

The Longhorns came into the year as the preseason No. 1 team in both the coaches and Associated Press polls. It marked the first time in program history that Texas has ever been ranked No. 1 before the season.

Now, as a result of that preseason honor, the Longhorns have made some unfortunate history. According to On3’s Brett McMurphy, Texas is the first preseason No. 1 team to be held scoreless in the first half of its season-opener since Florida State in 1988.

The Noles were shutout for the entire game, losing 31-0 to rival Miami 37 years ago:

Texas still has a chance to avoid falling in Florida State’s footsteps. The Longhorns were small underdogs according to most of the best sports betting apps before the game.

It was an especially slow start for Heisman Trophy front-runner Arch Manning, who threw for just 26 yards on 10 attempts before the break. Manning never found a rhythm and the Longhorns really struggled in third down in particular.

Texas is trying to avenge its loss in the CFP semifinals to Ohio State last season. The Longhorns and Buckeyes have met 4 times previously, with each team winning twice.
