Who’s the quarterback at Texas A&M this week?
Not even the Aggies’ head coach knows the answer to that question right now.
Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin said that his quarterbacks were battling in practice, and whichever one performed the best this week would start Saturday against Vanderbilt.
“We’ll evaluate where we are in practice,” Sumlin told the Houston Chronicle. “We’ve had some good moments, some not so good moments (with both). We’re looking for consistency out of the position, and that’s what this week of practice will be about. We’ll name a starter as we get closer to game time.”
Kyler Murray, Kyle Allen and Jake Hubenak have all taken snaps for the Aggies this year.
Murray had been the starter the last three weeks. But he threw three interceptions in a 26-10 loss to Auburn two weeks ago and was picked off two more times by Western Carolina in last week’s 41-17 win. Western Carolina defenders also dropped three potential interceptions.
The Aggies are currently ranked 11th in the SEC in turnover margin. Frustrated by the turnovers, Sumlin has decided to reopen the competition this week.
“It’s something that we’ve put an emphasis on, our turnover margin,” Sumlin said in this story. “We’re minus-3 for the year. … There’s no secret, with the exception of Saturday, the games that we’ve won we’ve been in the plus category in turnover ratio. The games that we’ve lost, we’ve been on the bottom end of that. That has a lot to do with people who touch the ball.”
Allen started Texas A&M’s first seven games. He has passed for 1,1713 yards and 15 touchdowns, while being picked off six times. Murray has started the Aggies’ last three games, and has thrown for 686 yards and five touchdowns, with seven interceptions. Murray has also rushed for 335 yards and a touchdown. Hubenak has passed for 92 yards and a touchdown in limited action.
Texas A&M (7-3) travels to Vanderbilt (4-6) this Saturday. The 7:30 p.m. ET game will be shown on the SEC Network.
