You can’t blame Tulane for not trying.
The Green Wave reportedly made an offer to current coach Jon Sumrall to stay at Tulane during the wild coaching carousel weekend – looking to retain his services in New Orleans even as Sumrall is reportedly be courted by Florida, Auburn and Ole Miss.
Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger said that Sumrall was offered a multi-year deal at Tulane averaging more than $4 million per year, an extension that would make him the second-highest-paid non-Power 4 coach in the country
Sumrall, 43, reportedly would like to stay with No. 24 Tulane as the Green Wave play North Texas for the American Conference championship on Friday (8 pm ET, ABC). He is 19-7 in 2 seasons at Tulane, with back-to-back appearances in the American title game. Before Tulane, Sumrall coached Troy from 2022-23 and went 23-4 there.
Sumrall played in the SEC as a linebacker at Kentucky and also served both at Ole Miss and in Lexington as an assistant coach before getting the Troy job – where he would win back-to-back Sun Belt Conference championships.
Sumrall reportedly plans to meet with Tulane athletic director David Harris on Sunday to discuss his future before making a decision on 2026.
