The UCLA Bruins football program fell off drastically after DeShaun Foster took the reins from Chip Kelly. Their downturn appears to have been short-lived, though, now that Bob Chesney is in town.

Chesney, the former coach at James Madison, has the Bruins at 5-0 following a road victory at Oregon last weekend. Ahead of that contest with the Ducks, he told his team a story that morphed into an incredible pregame speech.

“[This guy’s] about to go in and start the war. And he loves to make sure nobody has any other thought… other than [being] 100% positive, we’re winning this f–king battle,” Chesney said in the tunnel. “He turns around… and says, ‘burn the f–king boats!’ There is no way out. You can’t go that way. You gotta go through these mother f–kers… one way out!”

UCLA out-possessed Oregon by more than a full quarter of game time (39:15-20:45) and forced the Ducks into seven turnovers, but only wound up sneaking away with a 17-15 win. Regardless of the margin, the victory at Autzen Stadium is huge for Chesney and the program’s College Football Playoff resume.

The Bruins didn’t experience entirely sunshine and rainbows in their triumph. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava suffered what On3’s Pete Nakos has reported is a torn ACL in the win. That ailment, which UCLA has not yet confirmed, would end Iamaleava’s season.

The Bruins are expected to start Cal Poly transfer Ty Dieffenbach vs. Wisconsin in Week 7.
