Vanderbilt makes program history with Week 4 entry into AP Top 25
While other programs in college football are already dealing with coach firings and disappointing starts to the season, Vanderbilt‘s fanbase is among the few that has to be elated with how its team has begun the season.
Commodore fans have enjoyed watching their team get out to its first 3-0 start since 2017, as Diego Pavia & Co. cruised to wins over Charleston Southern, Virginia Tech and South Carolina while making each of them look inferior in dominant performances.
The AP’s voters have certainly taken notice of that impressive start to the season, because they slotted Vanderbilt at No. 20 in their latest rankings. Meanwhile, the recent Coaches Poll ranked the ‘Dores at No. 23.
And as Grace Hall of Vandy Hustler Sports pointed out, Week 4 is actually the earliest Vanderbilt’s program has ever been ranked in a season.
The Commodores’ 31-7 victory over South Carolina on Saturday night was their first win in an SEC-opener since 2011, and on top of that, the team has now beaten three-straight teams by 20+ points. That feat was last accomplished by the program in 1930.
Clark Lea‘s team will host a pair of Group of Five teams over the next two weeks before it resumes conference play. Up first, Georgia State will visit Nashville, with the Panthers hoping to complete a home-and-home sweep of Vandy after they pulled off a stunning upset in Atlanta last season.
