Vanderbilt’s depth at quarterback appears to have taken a hit, as senior quarterback Wade Freebeck was not at practice Monday for the Commodores first day of spring football.
With junior Kyle Shurmur emerging down the stretch of last season, Freebeck may have felt his chance to see the field had been greatly diminished heading into the 2017 season. According to Adam Sparks of the Tennessean, head coach Derek Mason addressed Freebeck’s absence from practice.
“Wade is looking at options right now,” Mason said. “We would like to do whatever we can to make sure Wade is successful.”
According to Kara Hammer, Freebeck has already been removed from the roster.

During his three-year career in Nashville, Freebeck threw for 479 yards, one touchdown, and seven interceptions. Meanwhile, Shurmur concluded last season throwing for over 220 yards in four of his last five games – including a personal-best 416 passing yards against Tennessee in the regular season finale.
