Verge Ausberry will reportedly be named LSU’s permanent athletics director under new university president Wade Rousse, just days after the now-former deputy AD was named interim AD after Scott Woodward’s firing. Ausberry’s main priority will be naming a replacement for Brian Kelly, a search he’ll be leading with Rousse, several donors, and university board members.

Tigers fans will be looking for a proven winner that can get the program back to championship form. One name that’s been brought up as a possibility? Nick Saban. Saban, of course, coached at LSU from 2000 to 2004, leading it to a title in 2003.

Those wishing for a Saban-LSU reunion, though, won’t want to hear what Ausberry told 104.5 ESPN’s Matt Moscana on Tuesday.

“That’s not going to happen. If he was interested, I’d go drive and pick him up right now. That’s run its course,” Ausberry said.

With Saban’s name off the list, all eyes will be fixed on Baton Rouge to see who is on it. Whoever it is will be charged with leading the Tigers to a first national championship since the 2019 season.

In the two following seasons, Ed Orgeron went 11-12 before parting ways with the program. Kelly was then hired from Notre Dame and went 34-14 overall, including a 5-3 start in 2025.
