Walk-On Aaron Davis could shore up iffy Georgia secondary

Though just a redshirt freshman walk-on, DB Aaron Davis ended spring practice as a first-team cornerback and has carried that momentum into the fall, moving to safety but having every bit the impact he did in the spring.

“Aaron’s legit, he knows every position,” sophomore J.J. Green, who plays the star and safety positions, told the Athens-Banner Herald.  Green, who is 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds from Locust Grove, Ga. reportedly has worked only at safety through the fall’s first three practices.  The move for Davis came after Tray Matthews was dismissed from the team in June.

Davis said he had played some safety before, and said it would be a little bit of a transition. “We learn by concepts,” Davis said.  “Safety has a little more responsibility than corner in terms of making play calls. It helps me to grasp the entire picture better.”

The Bulldogs’ secondary is their biggest question mark, and with senior corner Damien Swann being the only player with a position locked up and heralded freshman Lorenzo Carter making waves at linebacker, the back seven is looking like it could end up being a strength of first-year defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt’s unit.
