Wasted talent? Eagles announce release of former No. 1 overall recruit Dorial Green-Beckham

Talent can only take you so far in football. It’s a hard truth that many players never seem to grasp. A good example of that is the uber-talented Dorial Green-Beckham.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pound receiver signed with Missouri after rating as the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit in the 2012 recruiting cycle. While he was able to make a big impact on the first Missouri team to capture an SEC East title in 2013, he caught 59 passes for 883 yards and 12 touchdowns as a true sophomore, it wasn’t long before Green-Beckham was booted from the team following multiple run-ins with the law.
After transferring to Oklahoma, seemingly the new home for college football players with shady backgrounds under former coach Bob Stoops, Green-Beckham left Norman to enter the 2015 NFL Draft without ever making an appearance for the Sooners on the field.
To no surprise, the NFL mostly overlooked Green-Beckham’s past, as he “fell” to the second round and was selected with the No. 40 selection by the Tennessee Titans. He lasted one season in Nashville, a rarity for a second-round pick, before the team traded him to Philadelphia. Less than a year later, Green-Beckham finds himself released from the Eagles and searching for his third NFL team in as many seasons.

Don’t be surprised when a receiver-needy team takes a chance on the talented DGB in the coming weeks and months, after all, talent has never been his issue. At the same time, if the light hasn’t come on for Green-Beckham yet, you have to wonder if it ever will.
