WATCH: Northern Illinois couldn’t even wait for second quarter to run the worst fake of bowl season

The Quick Lane Bowl only just got underway, but there’s already been a play that will be in consideration for the worst play of the bowl season.
That came courtesy of Northern Illinois in the first quarter, as the punter ran one of the worst fake punts you’ll ever see.
As you can see in the video below, shared by @FootballScoop on Twitter, the NIU punter catches the ball in his own end zone on 4th and 18 and proceeds to throw a terrible pass that got nowhere near the first down:

Even if the punter had completed the pass, it wouldn’t have gone for the first down, so it wasn’t exactly a great play design either way.
On a very much related note, Duke leads the game 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, thanks in large part to that awful fake punt attempt.
