Any time you venture into the comments on X (formerly Twitter) these days, which we don’t recommend doing too often, you’ll see someone tagging Grok, an AI assistant, to ask it a question about the original post.

But Grok can do a lot more. And some of the things Grok can do are pretty fun. For example, we asked Grok to compare every current SEC football head coach to a famous actor.

The results were … actually pretty solid. The comparisons for Kirby Smart and Lane Kiffin are spot-on.

There were some interesting ones, though. For example, Mizzou coach Eli Drinkwitz was compared to a Kansas graduate, while Tennessee coach Josh Heupel drew a comparison to an actor who is basically synonymous with Texas football.

So while it’s clear Grok doesn’t always have the best knowledge of college football rivalries, it did a good job with these actor comps. Here are the comparisons Grok made for every SEC football head coach (in no particular order, apparently):

Kirby Smart (Georgia) – Denzel Washington

Smartโ€™s intense, commanding presence and proven track record as a winner mirror Washingtonโ€™s powerful, charismatic performances in films like Training Day. Both exude leadership and demand respect.

Brian Kelly (LSU) – Al Pacino

Kellyโ€™s fiery, sometimes theatrical demeanor, especially at the podium, aligns with Pacinoโ€™s passionate, larger-than-life roles in Scarface or Any Given Sunday. Heโ€™s a veteran who can still stir the pot.

Kalen DeBoer (Alabama) – Chris Hemsworth

DeBoerโ€™s calm, confident, and composed nature, paired with his rapid rise to prominence, evokes Hemsworthโ€™s approachable yet heroic vibe, like in Thor. Heโ€™s a new face taking on a legendary role.

Steve Sarkisian (Texas) – Ryan Gosling

Sarkisianโ€™s cool, calculated play-calling and resurgence at Texas match Goslingโ€™s smooth, versatile charm seen in Drive or The Nice Guys. Both have a knack for reinventing themselves.

Lane Kiffin (Ole Miss) – Robert Downey Jr.

Kiffinโ€™s witty, brash persona and ability to rebound from early career setbacks parallel Downeyโ€™s charismatic, comeback story in Iron Man. Heโ€™s a sharp, polarizing figure who thrives in the spotlight.

Josh Heupel (Tennessee) – Matthew McConaughey

Heupelโ€™s laid-back yet innovative offensive mind and his knack for reviving Tennesseeโ€™s swagger vibe with McConaugheyโ€™s easygoing charm and Texas drawl in Dazed and Confused.

Mike Elko (Texas A&M) – Mark Wahlberg

Elkoโ€™s gritty, no-nonsense approach and ability to build programs (like at Duke) mirror Wahlbergโ€™s tough, relatable energy in films like The Fighter. Heโ€™s ready to bring Aggie pride back.

Mark Stoops (Kentucky) – Hugh Jackman

Stoopsโ€™ steady, consistent leadership at Kentucky, with a touch of grit, aligns with Jackmanโ€™s versatile, enduring presence in The Wolverine or Les Misรฉrables. Heโ€™s reliable but not flashy.

Brent Venables (Oklahoma) – Tom Hardy

Venablesโ€™ intense, defensive-minded approach and resilience after a rocky start at OU evoke Hardyโ€™s brooding, tough-guy roles in Mad Max: Fury Road. Heโ€™s battle-tested and ready for the SEC grind.

Hugh Freeze (Auburn) – Jon Heder

Freezeโ€™s quirky, high-energy offensive schemes and past controversies pair with Hederโ€™s awkward yet endearing vibe from Napoleon Dynamite. Heโ€™s trying to dance his way back to relevance.

Eliah Drinkwitz (Missouri) – Paul Rudd

Drinkwitzโ€™s youthful energy and clever offensive schemes match Ruddโ€™s likable, everyman charm in Ant-Man. Heโ€™s quietly building something big at Mizzou.

Sam Pittman (Arkansas) – John Goodman

Pittmanโ€™s affable, down-to-earth personality and fan-favorite status echo Goodmanโ€™s warm, relatable roles in The Big Lebowski. Heโ€™s the coach you want to grab a beer with.

Shane Beamer (South Carolina) – Chris Pratt

Beamerโ€™s upbeat, enthusiastic style and ability to overachieve at South Carolina align with Prattโ€™s charismatic, underdog energy in Guardians of the Galaxy. Heโ€™s still proving himself.

Billy Napier (Florida) – James McAvoy

Napierโ€™s introspective, high-pressure role at Florida, with mixed results, mirrors McAvoyโ€™s complex, struggling characters in Split. Heโ€™s talented but facing tough odds.

Jeff Lebby (Mississippi State) – Jesse Eisenberg

Lebbyโ€™s fast-talking, high-octane offensive mind and newness to head coaching evoke Eisenbergโ€™s quick-witted, nervous energy in The Social Network. Heโ€™s got big ideas but needs time.

Clark Lea (Vanderbilt) – Edward Norton

Leaโ€™s cerebral, Ivy League background and tough task at Vandy align with Nortonโ€™s intense, intellectual roles in Fight Club. Heโ€™s fighting an uphill battle with limited resources.

(Editor’s Note: I have no idea where Grok got the “Ivy League background” thing for Lea. He started his coaching career at Harvard-Westlake School in California, so maybe that’s it?)
