Derek Mason was pleased with how his defense played in the first half at Florida. Then things went south.
โDefense played a sold, 30-minute football game and kept us in the hunt. But it got out of hand real fast because of mistakes,โ Mason said after a 56-0 loss to the Gators in Gainesville. โI want everybody to own it. Iโm always going to own it. Thatโs the not the way we want to play. Thatโs not what weโre looking for. I love these guys in the locker room, but when itโs all said and done itโs a production game and we werenโt very productive.โ
The Commodores trailed only 14-0 at the half. VU’s defense had come up with some key turnovers, but the offense struggled mightily.
“As that game went on, we just couldnโt do enough,” Mason said. “We’ve got to find a way to put points on the ball, period.”
Vanderbilt turned to Deuce Wallace at QB due to Mo Hasan and Riley Neal’s injuries. Wallace went 7-of-18 passing for 60 yards. Allan Walters came in during the fourth quarter. Walters’ first pass was intercepted. The head coach didn’t blame the blowout loss on QB play.
“Itโs a team game,”Mason said. “A quarterback doesnโt play offensive line. He doesnโt play in the back end in the secondary.”
Mason promised there will be changes after Vanderbilt’s 128-yard outpout.
“I’m just letting you know, collectively, there has got to be some changes,” coach Derek Mason said. “I just don’t like what I see all the way around. There are things that have got to be changed. There will be some changes, and we’ll make sure we get it right.”
