Texas softball is just one win away from stamping its second straight national championship. The Longhorns scored 5 runs in the first inning and never looked back on the way to a decisive Game 1 victory over Texas Tech, 7-3.
2025 College World Series Most Outstanding Player Teagan Kavan made her case to repeat for the award after another strong showing against the Red Raiders’ impressive batting lineup. She allowed just 3 hits (as well as 3 runs) with 6 strikeouts across a complete 7 innings. With Kavan on the mound, this one was pretty much over after the bottom of the first inning.
If Kavan doesn’t win the 2026 MOP award, Texas teammate Katie Stewart will certainly throw her hat in the ring. Texas’s all-time leader in home runs across a single season mashed a 2-run shot to center field to start things off, giving Texas a 2-1 lead.
As alluded to, Texas’s inning was far from over.
Kaiah Altmeyer and Ashton Maloney joined in on the fun a few moments later; Altmeyer’s RBI single drove Reese Atwood home while Maloney’s triple scored Altmeyer and Hannah Wells to increase Texas’ lead to 4.
The Red Raiders made an attempt at making things interesting in the 6th with a 2-run home run by star Mia Williams, but by then it was too late. Here’s a look at the final out:
The Longhorns look to slam the door shut and claim its second straight national title Thursday night, with coverage set to start at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN.
