Shai Gilgeous-Alexander agrees to record-breaking extension with OKC Thunder, per report
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has agreed to a lucrative new contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to a report.
ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported that news on Tuesday morning, noting the former Kentucky guard will sign a 4-year deal worth a projected $285 million. Gilgeous-Alexander is already under contract for the next 2 seasons, so this deal begins in 2027-28.
With this deal, Gilgeous-Alexander will now have the richest annual salary in NBA history:
The $285 million figure is subject to change. As ESPN’s Bobby Marks notes, SGA’s contract is based on a projected salary cap number for the 2027-28 season. The salary cap is expected increase by up to 10% annually for the foreseeable future, but exact figures are not yet known.
For now, here is the projected annual salary for Gilgeous-Alexander for this 4-year extension:
Gilgeous-Alexander could have waited a year and signed a 5-year extension worth upwards of $380 million in the summer of 2026. Instead, he’s committed to the Oklahoma City Thunder for the next 6 seasons.
OKC co-stars Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren are expected to sign lucrative extensions this summer as well. The Thunder won their first NBA title since moving to Oklahoma City last month.
