ESPN’s Pete Schrager explains Rams’ thinking behind Ty Simpson pick
Ty Simpson is a Los Angeles Ram. It’s something that people thought could happen in the 2026 NFL Draft, but something few truly expected to see when the Rams were on the clock at No. 13 overall.
Los Angeles, fresh off an NFC Championship game appearance, seemed bound to address a short-term need to aid its Super Bowl aspirations with its first-round pick. Instead, general manager Les Snead opted for the long-term, post-Matthew Stafford route. ESPN’s Peter Schrager walked through the Rams’ thought process on Friday morning’s episode of Get Up.
“Next year is the quarterback draft… the Rams have no intention to even be in the consideration to getting one of [those] quarterbacks,” Schrager said. “But they really like Ty Simpson in this year’s draft, where apparently no other teams were in the market for a quarterback… the Rams said, ‘we already have a first-round pick. That’s Trent McDuffie. We traded the [No. 29] pick for one of the best corners in football… so we can now go and get Ty Simpson…’ [it] seems like Stafford is on board.”
Schrager also tried to clear the air on Sean McVay looking a bit angry about the team picking Simpson.
“As much as McVay was doing all that [in the press conference], trust me: McVay is a Ty Simpson fan,” Schrager stated. “This is a long-term pick so that they are ensured that they have their guy.”
The Rams begin their quest for Super Bowl LXI in Australia versus the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 10 (8:35 p.m. E.T.).
