Former Florida DB CJ Gardner-Johnson carted off field after injury in Bills practice

Former Florida defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson had to be carted off the field Saturday at Buffalo Bills practice.

Gardner-Johnson was observed having to be helped off the field after suffering what appeared to be a non-contact leg injury. Gardner-Johnson then visited the medical tent before being carted to the locker room.

Gardner-Johnson, 28, is entering Year 8 of his NFL career. It is his first season in Buffalo.

The Bills signed Gardner-Johnson on a 1-year, $6 million contract in March. Gardner-Johnson has frequently been on the move after playing his first three seasons with the New Orleans Saints.

Gardner-Johnson’s 2025 season began as a member of the Houston Texans. He was released, however, after starting the team’s first 3 games. He spent a week on the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad before being released again.

The Chicago Bears added Gardner-Johnson to their roster on Oct. 29. Gardner-Johnson played in 10 regular-season games, recording 51 total tackles (5 TFLs), 4 passes defended, 2 interceptions and a career-high 3 sacks. He logged 15 total tackles in Houston before his release from the Texans.

For his career, Gardner-Johnson has played in 87 regular-season games, making 71 starts. He has recorded 370 total tackles, 27 TFLs, 7 sacks, 55 passes defended and 20 interceptions. He has had multiple stints with the Philadelphia Eagles (2022, 2024) in between his season with the Detroit Lions in 2023.
