Former Tennessee OL Trey Smith has landed a long-term contract extension, barely beating the franchise tag deadline with the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the two sides reached a Tuesday agreement on a massive 4-year extension for the former Volunteer. Rapoport reports it is a deal with a max value of $94 million with a $70 million guarantee, making Smith the highest-paid guard in the league.

While in Knoxville, Smith was a standout guard for Tennessee, earning back-to-back first-team All-SEC honors in 2019 and 2020. Unfortunately, health concerns coming out of college allowed him to fall to the 6th round in the 2021 NFL Draft, but he quickly became one of the largest steals and a cornerstone for Kansas City.

As a rookie, Smith started all 17 games in the 2021 NFL season. He has since started 67 games across 4 seasons as a bedrock piece for the line that protects star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Smith has been a part of 2 Super Bowl titles and is coming off his first Pro Bowl selection in 2024.

Mahomes himself has since re-posted the reports of Smith’s extension and shared a simple emoji that should indicate just how major Smith’s extension is for the franchise.
